Never one to shirk admiration, Richard Strauss composed a major tone poem in his own honor! Ein Heldenleben represents the summing-up of his orchestral wizardry, calling for a gigantic orchestra with eight french horns and triple winds. It requires blazing virtuosity in all sections, and the Minnesota Orchestra, under the direction of Eiji Oue rises magnificently to the challenge.
Conductor Erich Leinsdorf fashioned a brilliant orchestral suite from the Strauss opera Die Frau ohne Schatten (The Woman Without a Shadow), which is equally lush and even more romantic in flavor. Oue and the Minnesotans give this little known, but highly appealing music a stunning performance --- and its first digital recording.
