ELISION

NMC D143

D143 Cover
  • This is an 'Ancora+' disc, a re-issue which includes additional new material.   Codex I is a live recording released here for the first time.
  • Another heavenly day takes its title from Samuel Beckett's play Happy Days in which the character is buried up to her waist in sand throughout the drama.
  • This is ELISION's second Richard Barrett recording on NMC.   Their first was Transmission (NMC D117) - a series of virtuosic solo works exploring the limits of acoustic instruments.
  • Barrett's electronic duo FURT regularly performs with jazz/improv performers such as Evan Parker.

  • Barrett's work encompasses both composition and improvisation, ranging from chamber music to innovative uses of live electronics and collaborations with visual artists.   Much of his work arises from close long-term collaborations, such as his association with ELISION (since1990) and the electronic duo FURT with Paul Obermayer (since 1986).

Barrett is inspired by various art forms, especially the works of Samuel Beckett, the surrealist painter Roberto Matta and poet Paul Celan and his music has a complexity similar to that of composers like Michael Finnissy and Brian Ferneyhough.

Richard Barrett was born in 1959 in Swansea (Wales), and currently lives in Amsterdam.
