The soadie waste, subtitled wedding receptions, dances and housie housie is
inspired by an old dance hall in Rutherglen, near where James Dillon grew up
on the outskirts of Glasgow. Dillon explains that 'The soadie waste' was the
local name for the social club which was built on the wasteland of an old
chemical factory, and it was said that residual fumes from below would seep
through the floorboards during a hot dance session. This is exuberantly
physical music, evoking rowdy celebrations rather than a chemically
traumatised populace.
First appearance on NMC by the world-renowned Arditti Quartet who are
among the most influential exponents of contemporary classical music.
Follows the huge success and acclaim of Dillon’s The Book of Elements (NMC
D091) performed by Noriko Kawai.
The Arditti Quartet has worked closely with James Dillon for years and
premiered many of his works.
