RENÉ MARIE

SERENE RENEGADE

RED SHOES
M
y extraordinary sister, Lynn, initially inspired these lyrics — particularly the first line — and it's pretty much my impression of her.   But also in the mix is the personality change that happens to women when we find that perfect pair of sexy shoes.   We put them on and —WHAM! —You cain't tell us nothin'.   Unh, unh, unh.

THE SOUTH IS MINE
M
y father, Lester, considered himself an “Architect of the human spirit.”   After his death, we found among his papers many poems.   One was entitled “The South is Mine” and contained fervent expressions of his love for the south and reasons why he never moved north.   He insisted on staying in the south — in the face of degradation, humiliation and peril to his own safety and livelihood — to desegregate lunch counters and fight for civil rights.   I wrote this to express my own love for the south and, as a nod to his late-discovered artistry, gave it the same title.
