A 1987 Philips Recording

I still remember clearly my conversation on a summer evening some four years ago with a discerning audiophile friend, Dr. D. Howard.   He was very impressed with the soundstage presentation of a famous Decca recording, Noye's Fludde, intimating that the sound was some of the best he had ever heard.   He remarked that the only other recording comparable in terms of soundscaping and stunning presence was Misa Criolla, a Philips recording featuring Jose Carreras.   He urged me to explore the possibility of having the latter album re-mastered for even better sound.   I had that album in my collection, and knew it was very good indeed, but told him it would take time to dig it out for listening.

Two days later, to my surprise.   Dr. Howard knocked at my door and handed me the Philips album, saying he had bought one for me to ensure I would take up the task.   He then hurried back to his surgery.   I stood bewildered at the door for a moment, touched by his sincerity.   I was uncertain how I could obtain the master tape from Philips, since I have never had any contact with this enormous organization.   However, I promised myself that I would try.

Two years later, I had the chance to re-master my beloved Noye's Fludde — but my dream was shattered when I discovered the first section of the old master tape was so dilapidated that the magic of the original sound could never be recovered.   I had to abandon the project with a sad sigh.

Determined to rally from this disappointment, I remembered my conversation with Dr. Howard.   I contacted Mr. Stephen Greene, Director of Catalog & Commercial Planning, Classics & Jazz, Universal Music Group International.   Mr. Greene has been very helpful in the past, and with half-hearted hope, knowing that I was bothering him with what must seem a trivial request, I asked again for his help.   To my delight, he kindly acceded to my plea and made an effort to assist me in obtaining the master tape of Misa Criolla!

So, here it is Dr. Howard!   Your dream has come true!   I must thank you for your inspiration, which triggered my determination to do this great recording.   Nelson Mandela was right again: “It always seems impossible until it's done”!

I am confident that audiophiles, music lovers, and even casual listeners will be captivated by the music, the singing artistry of Jose Carreras, and the soundscaping of this rendition.

Listen, please, and form your own judgment.
Thank you,
Winston Ma
