Recorded First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood, L.A., USA. June, 2002

Steve Siu and I had never met when, one evening in December of 2002, I received an email from an unknown writer.   The gentleman wished me to know that he was an FIM fan.   He had heard Steve Siu playing the piano and thought FIM should record this young performer.   The writer emphatically related that he was so impressed he could not help but write to me, convinced that FIM and Steve would create a wonderful synergy.   My instincts told me to take the opportunity to meet this twenty-three-year old talent.

Three weeks later, Steve flew to Seattle.   I had arranged for him to play in a local piano showroom, to demonstrate whether his skill could tempt me.   Steve played in a relaxed manner, at ease with any tune I requested, demonstrating splendid improvisation and colorful finger work that hypnotized all the visitors to the studio.   It seemed to me that Steve’s brain was a huge iPod, storing the scores of thousand of songs, both western and eastern.   His interpretation was unique and dramatic.   And although his style might not appeal to some serious classical music listeners, it certainly could capture the heart of many, in particular, in the audiophile community.

With a new friendship begun, a few months later, in July 2003, a recording session was scheduled for Steve in an old church in L.A.   At the keyboard of one of the best nine-foot Concert Grand Hamburg Steinways available at the time, Steve smoothly completed the session in just one day!

At the release of this disc today, in 2009, you may wonder why this album has been so long between recording and release.   The delay is indeed a shame…and involves a story that you might not believe, true though it is.

How good is it?   You be the judge.

As a final note, the bonus track is a medley of popular Hong Kong melodies improvised by Steve as a tribute to our longing for our home town.
