The Diamond of Ferrara
Music from the Court of Ecole I

Ex Umbris

DOR-93225 Cover

The long reign of Ercole d'Este, Duke of Ferrara (b.1431: r1471-1505) was marked by his avid support of the visual arts, letters, and music; indeed he was better known in his day for his leisure activities than for his statecraft.   He sponsored countless public festivals and entertainments, commissioned an addition to the city by the architect Biagio Rossetti, and was patron to Matteo Maria Boiardo, author of the great epic poem Orlando Innamorato, and briefly, to Lodovico Ariosto, author of the sequel Orlando Furioso.   He retained the services of the most famous lutenist of the day, Pietrobono, and Josquin Desprez wrote the mass Hercules Dux Ferrarie in Ercole's honor, using a melodic motive based on the syllables of the duke's name.
