O Lux Beata
Renaissance Harp Music

Becky Baxter

DOR-93193 Cover
Published harp music in the Renaissance was a rare commodity.   An outpourong of popular songs, as well as lute and keyboard music was being published by Pierre Attaingnant (c.1494 - c.1552) in France and by Ottaviano dei Petrucci (1466 - 1539) in Italy.   Interestingly, the first harp examples appear in Spain where a relatively small amount of music publishing may be observed.   Antonio de Cabezón's Obras de Musica, 1578 and Luis Venegas de Henestrosa's Libro de cifra nueva para tecla, arpa y vibuela 1557 are the two most important harp sources.   In the extended full titles of both works it is stated that the music may be played on the keyboard, harp or the vihuela.   These substantial publications contain a wide variety of music genre: glosas, fantasias, tientos, fabordones, himnos, villancicos, salmos, romances, entradas, canciones, and diferencias.
