The differences between the two composers' lives, and the two compositions themselves, are profound and numerous. Still, there are some fascinating connections between the two men and their works. Since they shared the same historical time period and many of the same cultural influences, they started out with many of the same raw materials, save for the difference in nationality. Yet the two could scarcely have achieved more strikingly different results if they had set out to do so deliberately. There is one undeniable similarity between these two Piano Quartets: both are effective, moving compositions which have passed into an undeserved obscurity. Our hope is that this release will begin the work of restoring both pieces to the standard repertoire. - George Work
