"If I had known it was possible to create sounds like this, I would have written a cello concerto of my own long since." Legend has it that Brahms reacted to the Vienna premiere of Dvorák's famous B minor Cello Concerto with these words. If true, it was a strange thing for Brahms to say. For while it is true that Brahms never wrote a solo cello concerto, he is of course the composer of the well known Double Concerto for violin and cello, and the two cello and piano sonatas that comprise the bulk of this recording. These pieces, along with the Dvorák concertpieces and the Concerto which Brahms apparently so admired, largely created the Romantic tradition of writing music for the cello. Certainly they are permanent centerpieces of the repertoire. Brahm's disclaimer, if he ever really made it, must be taken simply as an expression of heartfelt admiration for Dvorák, whose cello music is both like and unlike his own.- George Work
