VIRTUOSO! A Treasury of Favorite Violin Encores
Jaime Laredo, Violin Margo Garret, Piano
"Encore", a French word that itself probably originated in Vulgar Latin, means "again" and usually refers to a repeat or additional performance in response to audience demand. The repertoire of short pieces, usually in simple song-forms, that have become known as 'encore pieces' were rarely composed for that specific purpose; however, they lend themselves to that function particularly well. In former times - before academics, critics and other Superior Persons decreed that recitals ought to be sonata programs - such pieces were often arranged in groups to form the entire second half of a program.
