Dorian RecordingsDOR-90151J.S. BACH VOLUME 4. JEAN GUILLOU, ORGAN Recorded at the Kleuker-Steinmeyer organ of the Tonhalle, Zürich. Toccata and Fugue in F Major, BWV 540 One of the more famous of the major prgan works of Sebastian Bach, the Toccata and Fugue in F Major, BWV 540, is both a contrapuntal and virtuoso tour de force. The 438 measure Toccata is the longest of any of the free preludes for organ. Prelude and Fugue in E Minor, BWV 548 This astonishing masterpiece, arguably the greatest of all of Bach's Preludes and Fugues, is the ne plus ultra of the Northern German compositional style. One cannot help but wonder what Buxtehude or Bruns would have thought had they lived to hear this incredible composition. The "Great" E Minor Prelude and Fugue has come down to us in a fair copy written out by Bach and his pupil Johann Peter Kellner, who took over after the first twenty measures of the Fugue. - Teri Noel Towe
