Without question, the Prelude and Fugue in B Minor, BWV 544 is one of Bach's greatest acheivements. On his fair copy, which he could have written out no earlier than 1727 and no later than 1740, he titled his mature masterpiece "Praeludium pro Organo cum pedal obligato". Complex and intense, laden with chromaticism and sinuous lines, the Prelude is laid out in the manner of a Baroque concerto movement with an opening and concluding ritornello, snippets of which can be heard as a refrain throughout the Prelude.…
