FRANZ SCHUBERT WINTERREISE D911 POEMS BY WILHELM MÜLLER
VICTOR BRAUN, BARITONE ANTONIN KUBALEK, PIANO
Winterreise was composed in 1827 to verses by the same Wilhelm Müller who had already furnished the lyrics for Schubert's other great song cycle Die schöne Müllerin.
Müller died in 1827, and so never heard Schubert's settings of his poems.
But for Schubert's settings of his poems, Müller would have been long forgotten.   It is Schubert's genius that transforms the poet's rather simple, often sentimental but unpretentious verses in a unique and unforgettable way, illuminating and deepening their meaning so as to universalize the wanderer's experience. Müller contributed singable lines; the composer the rest.
