Goeth's novel, Wilhelm Meister, published in 1796, was a seminal work not only for the development of the Romantic novel during the 19th century, but also for the many musical compositions inspired both by the numerous poems scattered throughout its text as well as by the story of the novel itself. Ambroise Thomas' opera Mignon is the best known of the larger musical works based on the Wilhelm Meister story and the poems have been set to music by comosers ranging from Schubert to Tchaikovsky.
