The opening theme is elegant, graceful and captivating. Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky's "Seasons", Op. 37a - twelve short piano pieces corresponding to the twelve months of the year - were written by the 36 year-old composer in 1876 at the request of N.M. Bernard, the editor of the St.Petersburg music magazine, Nuvellist. The Four Valses, written in 1984 were originally a set of six. After I had studied them for about a month, Milan (Kymlicka) asked for their return, as he put it, to make a few "corrections". To my great surprise, I was given back not six but four almost entirely different pieces. Still, these short Valses are gems, tremendous fun to play and always a great success with audiences wherever they are performed. - Antonin Kubalek
