This smoking organ trio recording is both a first for guitarist Larry Coryell and a return to his roots. Although his massive discography (numbering over 100 albums as a leader and sideman) does not include any previous organ trio outings, some of his earliest working situations were inspired by the likes of the Wes Montgomery trio with organist Melvin Rhyne and drummer Paul Parker and the Grant Green trio with organist Larry Young and drummer Otis Candy Finch. As Coryell writes in his recent biography, Improvising: My Life In Music (Backbeat Books): My first gig as a leader was at the Embers in West Seattle (1964). I had an organ trio and lived in a rather spartan apartment just up the hill from the club. Of course, 'spartan' in Seattle was and still is 'lap of luxury' compared to New York.
