Hybrid Disc LeeKonitz Parallels [SACD240]
Legendary alto/tenor saxophonist, Lee Konitz, has led an extensive recording career that spans six decades. From the birth of Cool experiments with Miles Davis (1948-50) to his collaborations over time with Lennie Tristano, Stan Kenton, Charles Mingus, Gil Evans, Joe Henderson, Jim Hall and more, Konitz is truly one of the key icons in development of Cool Jazz. This recording marks the manifestation of Lee's desire to represent the Possibilities to be creative in the organic, improvisational nature of jazz by combining it with parallel basis of Chesky Records' recording philosophy - recreating a live, spontaneous event with the greatest accuracy possible. | |
Making his Chesky debut, Konitz is backed by a group of gifted musicians including Bill Goodwin on drums, Peter Bernstein on guitar, Steve Gilmore on Bass and featuring guest performer, Mark Turner (Warner Bros.) on tenor saxophone. This jazz veteran shows no sign of running out of steam, enthusiasm or ideas and on Parallels it is clearly evident that Konitz's musical approach is still as fresh as it was in the 50s/60s Featuring breathtaking renditions of Irving Berlin's How Deep is the Ocean, Hoagy Carmichael's Skylark and Lennie Tristano's 317 East 32nd. LT, a new track dedicated to long time friend and mentor, Lennie Tristano, demonstrates the dissonant harmonizing and remarkable agility between the alto and tenor saxophones. The experimental and impulsive style on Eyes, a special track that Konitz spontaneously wrote with Turner, shows how young and prodigious saxophonists, like Mark Turner are being heavily inspired by living legends.
