WHAT IS DVD-AUDIO?
DVD-Audio was conceived as a next generation DVD format - with sound quality beyond the best DVD-Videos and CDs.   That said, it might be easier to describe the virtues of DVD-A by illustrating the differences between DVD-V and DVD-A.   While DVD-A shares the same basic 4.7 gigabit platform of standard DVDs, it devotes the bulk of its capacity to audio, rather than video information.   DVD-A is a versatile format, and supports 44.1, 48, 88.2,96,176.2, and 192-kHz sampling rates, and digital word lengths from 16 to 24 bits.   Standard DVDs use Dolby Digital and/or DTS soundtracks at 48 kHz and up to 24 bits, but those formats incorporate lossy compression coding and therefore offer limited sound potential.   DVD-A employs a new coding system, Meridian Lossless Packing (lossless refers to MLP's ability to deliver a bit-for-bit accurate signal to the playback stage).   Unlike lossy data reduction systems, lossless coding won't diminish the sound quality of the decoded signal in any way - it "packs" the signal more efficiently into a smaller data rate.   This proprietary technology was developed in England by Meridian Audio.

Multi-Channel sound is also a big part of the DVD-A story.   Standard DVD-Vs are limited to a maximum of 5.1 channels (the .1 channel is a bass-only channel), DVD-As can offer six full-range channels.   Chesky is one of the few record companies taking full advantage of DVD-A's 6.0 capability.   To maintain compatibility with standard DVD players, Chesky DVD-A discs also provide Dolby Digital audio tracks.

CHESKY 2/4/6 ULTIMATE COMPATIBILITY
Our 2/4/6 DVD-A discs offer three separate 96/24 mixes - stereo, four channel, and six channel.   The stereo (2.0) mix is identical to the CD version, but offers superior sound quality thanks to DVD-A's higher resolution and ambiance retrieval.   The 5.1 compatible 4.0 mix utilizes the stereo mix in the front speakers, and adds rear speakers to handle the surround sound. 6.0 uses the very same stereo and surround mixes, and then adds front side "proscenium" speakers to complete the recreation of the original sonic event.
