A General Note:
Many of the test tones on this disc are made from filtered pink noise, a hiss-like sound.   We have avoided the pure tone sine waves used on typical test discs because they are virtually impossible to localize and may produce large variations with only slight changes in listener position (track 31). Except for the surround sound tests, the room acoustics test, and the voice announcements, the test tones were computer generated on a 386-type PC using custom written or custom modified programs in FORTRAN BASIC and C.

The sound card was the CardD from Digital Audio Labs (Minneapolis, MN), which can provide an S/PDIF digital output.   The test signals, saved as 16-bit 44.1kHz stereo Windows •WAV files, were played in digital form through the S/PDIF interface directly to a DAT recorder.   That DAT tape was digitally edited into the master for this CD.
