Three generations of the Sweelinck family presided almost continuously at the organ of the Oude Kirk, Amsterdam between 1564 and 1652 with pride of place given to the central figure, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (1562-1621).   Famed as a virtuoso performer and composer, he was also recognized as one of the great teachers of his age, attracting pupils from all over Europe, notably Peter Phillips and John Bull from England and Samuel and Gottfried Scheldt, Jacob Praetorius and Heinrich Scheidemann from Germany.   At one point in the seventeenth century, three of the central churches in Hamburg boasted Sweelinck students as organists: Ulrich Cernitz, Praetorius and Scheidemann, and it's little wonder he earned the designation, Hamburgischer Organistenmacher (maker of Hamburg's organists).   Samuel Scheldt and Scheidemann, in particular, built on his teachings in North Germany, setting in motion a school of playing that would find its ultimate master in Johann Sebastian Bach.
