Stokowski conducts
Tchaikovsy: Swan Lake highlights
Recorded in 1954-55, the original LP was universally hailed by the critics. The present disc offers Acts 2 and 3 in a splendid performance by Leopold Stokowski. He indulges in very little tampering, favours rather brisk tempos, and makes the music threatrical in a surprisingly conservative way. This is a truly fine reading of the music and is well recorded. (The New Records).
Leopold Stokowski has gone to the core of the score - the sparkling music from the second and third acts. It is in every way a decided success, worthy to stand beside his excellent Sleeping Beauty (Cala CACD0522). His reading of the score is spacious, flowing, lyrical and reasonably free of caprice in matters of tempos and dynamics. The overall orchestral playing is superb, the sound bright, warm and well-engineered. (High Fidelity).
Stokowski conjures some beautiful sounds in excerpts from Swan Lake. In particular the tone of the woodwind soloists is lovely. For those who want a selection rather than the complete ballet this must now be my choice. (The Gramophone)
