Stokowski conducts Schumann Symphony No. 2. & Haydn Symphony No. 53 "Imperial" Leopold Stokowski conducts his Symphony Orchestra In 1949, Stokowski made his only recording of a Haydn symphony and the following year his only recording of a Schumann symphony, both reissued on this CD for the first time. Of the Schumann 2nd Symphony, critic Mortimer Frank wrote: "One of the great recordings of the score the performance does composer and conductor proud . . . the sound is exceptionally fine for its vintage." For these recordings, Stokowski conducted a specially formed orchestra of leading New York musicians which included section principals from both the NBC Symphony and the New York Philharmonic.
