Continuing Baby's Journey in Music PHILHARMONIA ORCHESTRA Geoffrey Simon, conductor A collection of music inspired by, and dedicated to children. Mother Goose - MAURICE RAVEL (1875-1937) Maurice Ravel adored children. Two of his special favourites were Mimi and Jean, whose parents were amongst the composer's closest friends. One day, way back in 1908, Ravel arrived at their doorstep bearing a gift under his arm. It was the piano duet Mother Goose, which he had dedicated to Mimi and Jean, who so loved listening to his marvellous telling of the legendary Mother Goose stories. The children were thrilled with Ravel's musical depiction of these fairy tales, and three years later he made the enchanting version for orchestra which we hear on this recording in its five short movements. |
