MARIA-EVE SCARFONE, piano

ACD2 2754
• Praised for her colorful, flexible voice and graceful stage presence, Canadian soprano Layla Claire is proud to present Songbird, her first solo recital recording.   Songbird features English songs by Britten and Barber, French melodies by Debussy, Bizet, Chausson, and German Lieder by Brahms, Wolf and Strauss.   She is accompanied by pianist Marie-Eve Scarfone.

• An expressive and experienced concert singer, Ms. Claire has worked with Bernard Haitink, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, James Levine, Michael Tilson Thomas, and Kent Nagano.   Her extensive international recital presence has included programs of art song at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, CBC Glenn Gould Studio, and a multi-city tour of Canada as the winner of the Eckhardt-Gramatte National Music Competition.

• A graduate of the Manhattan School of Music and the Université de Montréal, Marie-Eve Scarfone leads a very successful career as a pianist in Canada and abroad.   Quite active on the opera stage, Ms. Scarfone was the musical director of various opera productions (Wexford Festival Opera, Festival d'Opéra de Québec).   She is a rehearsal pianist at the Opéra de Montréal and the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, and is a vocal coach at McGill University and the Atelier lyrique de l'Opéra de Montréal.

• While still a member of the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, Layla Claire made her Metropolitan Opera debut in Don Carlo, led by Yannick Nézet-Séguin.   She has since returned to the stage for several guest appearances including the creation of the role of Helena in the Baroque pastiche The Enchanted Island under William Christie's baton, and as Anne Truelove in The Rake's Progress conducted by James Levine.

• This season Claire made her Salzburger Festspiele debut as Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, a role she reprised for Opéra de Montréal and in a return engagement with the Opernhaus Zürich.
