(The Forbidden Library) Opéra-tango Sébastien Ricard Tango Boréal ACD2 2752 Sébastien Ricard plays the idealistic poet in La Bibliothèque-Interdite (The Forbidden Library), an intimate tango-opera written and composed by Denis Plante. The libretto expands on the memories of a fictional poet who, like his celebrated contemporaries Astor Piazzolla and Jorge Luis Borges, would have been a kind of outsider. He arrived in Buenos Aires in 1940, and with a mix of curiosity and amazement, there discovered the tango. La Bibliothèque-Interdite is an original work in which recitatives and songs blend to create the poignant and pungent mood of magic realism so dear to Argentine culture. The work pays homage to writers and poets such as Borgès, Discepolo, and Arlt who, along with many others, spoke out against the rise of fascism. In the Tango Boréal ensemble, which provides the musical framework of the opera, Denis Plante's moving bandonéon and David Jacques' passionate guitar and charango are fuelled by the earthy rhythms of Ian Simpson's double bass. There will be a series of performances of La Bibliothèque-Interdite at the Théâtre de Quat'sous in Montreal between April 5 and 12, 2017. Sébastien Ricard divides his career between theatre, pop music (he is a founding member of the group Loco Locass), and political activism. He has performed on stage in numerous productions by Sibyllines, the company directed by Brigitte Haentjens, including L'opéra de quat'sous, La nuit juste avant les forê:ts, Woyzeck, and Vivre. His on-screen performance as Dédé Fortin in Dédé, à travers les brumes won him the Jutras Best Actor Award. Denis Plante has performed alongside such artists as Diane Dufresne, Gilles Vigneault, and André Gagnon. After spending some time in Argentina, he settled permanently in Quebec City, where he founded the Tango Boréal ensemble. His creativity has been recognized through numerous prizes, including the award for best song at the Festival international de la chanson de Granby, and the Quebec City Creator of the Year award from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec. His two most recent CDs on the ATMA Classique label, Tango Boréal and Pampa Blues, won Opus prizes for World Music disc of the year.
