Livre de luth de Gioseppe Antonio Doni
Lute Book by Gioseppe Antonio Doni

Sylvain Bergeron, archlute

ACD2 2724

• Described as “a supremely refined, elegant, cerebral musician” (Ottawa Citizen), Sylvain Bergeron is a master of the lute and plucked strings family of instruments including theorbo, archlute and baroque guitar.   On this new solo ATMA recording, Bergeron performs a selection of lute pieces from The Doni Lute Book, a manuscript compiled between 1620 and 1640 and preserved at the Archivio di Stato di Perugia (State Archive of Perugia, Italy).   The Doni Lute book is both an anthology and a manual; it contains a large number of unique and never recorded pieces, and it bears witness to the wealth of Italian lute music from the beginning of the 17th century.

• The Doni Lute book features more works by the prolific Neapolitan Andrea Falconieri (1585-1656), one of the greatest lute virtuosos of his day, than any other composer.   There are also pieces by El Tedesco (Giovanni Girolamo Kapsberger), Archangelo Lori, and Giuseppe Baglioni, among others.   The presence of technical exercises and of marginal notes on some pieces suggests that the manuscript is, in fact, a notebook that Doni kept while taking lute lessons from his master, Falconieri.

• Sylvain Bergeron has participated on 70 recordings, several of which have won prizes and awards.   Bergeron’s first solo album The Balcarres Lute Book was released on ATMA Classique in 2008 and was widely acclaimed for “solid lute technique combined with an uncanny musical intellect and impeccable phrasing” (Wholenote Magazine), while Goldberg Magazine described Bergeron’s playing as “rhythmically vital yet full of dedicacy and nuance.”   On this new recording Sylvain Bergeron plays on a 14 string archlute built by Andreas v. Holst (Munich, 2010) after Vendelio Venere (Padua, 1592).
