Three pieces on this CD pay homage to composers who left their mark on their times. El tigre del bandoneón was the nickname given to Eduardo Arolas (1882-1924) who, like Cóbian and later Piazzolla, freed the tango from the conventions of the period and created original and personal work. À la musique freely borrows the theme of a Schubert lied. El Zorzal was the nickname given to Carlos Gardel, the first star of Argentian tango. This solo is a countermelody to one of Gardel's most popular melodies, Por Una Cabeza. If you have a good ear, you may hear humming Denis Plante plays one of the famous doble A series bandoneons. His unusual career as a performer and composer makes him the bandoneon artist in Canada, and an exceptional figure in contemporary tango on the world scene. A spiritual son of Astor Piazzolla, he has enriched the bandoneon repertoire with dozens of works capturing the essential pulse of the tango.
