Giacomo Carissimi
was the greatest exponent of the Latin sacred historia.   He spent all his life in Rome, as maestro di cappella at the San Apollinare church.   This church was attached to the Collegio Germanico seminary, at which the Jesuits trained German-speaking missionaries for the task of spiritually re-conquering Lutheran Germany.   In his music, Carissimi perfectly embraced the views of his employers on appropriate means for stimulating faith.   With theatrical flair, remarkable imagination, and a verbal sensitivity equal to Monteverdi's, he brought Biblical characters to vivid life.

Born in Marino, near Rome, and baptized on April 18, 1605, Carissimi was the youngest of a cooper's seven children.   We don't know where he got his early musical training.   In l623 he was hired as a chorister and organist at the Tivoli cathedral.   Five years later he became maestro di cappelia at the San Ruffino cathedral in Assisi.   He arrived in Rome at the end of 1629 to work at San Apollinare, and remained at this post until his death on January 12, 1674.   Carissimi was ordained a priest in 1637.   On four Good Fridays, beginning on that of 1650, he conducted performances of his oratorios at the San Marcello church.   He led a quiet life; one of the few times it was disturbed was when he became guardian of an orphaned nephew and niece.   He was also a moneylender.   He bequeathed the wealth he accumulated to his employers, to be used in training young singers.
