L'HÉRITAGE BEETHOVEN Romantic horn music by Beethoven, Czerny, Ries & Moscheles Louis-Philippe Marsolais, horn David Jalbert, piano ACD2 2592 Among Beethoven's closest friends were three remarkable pianists of the Viennese school: Ferdinand Ries, Carl Czerny, and Ignaz Moscheles.   The first two were his students; the third was an unconditional admirer and financial supporter.   Like Beethoven, each of the three friends composed for the horn, an instrument then at a crossroads: the natural or hand horn, inherited from the Baroque era, was still being played, but was gradually being displaced by the valved horn, which first appeared around 1815. Former principal horn of the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Orchestra, and associate principal horn with the Orchestre symphonique de Québec, Louis-Philippe Marsolais is now dedicated to performing solo and chamber music. Canadian pianist David Jalbert has a growing career as a soloist, and has also appeared on disc and in recital as a duo partner, particularly with cellist Denise Djokic, and as a chamber musician.   His critically-acclaimed 2008 ATMA recording of the Shostakovich Preludes and Fugues (ACD2 2555) has been nominated for a JUNO Award as Best Canadian Classical Recording of the Year. “Once in a long while, an album arrives that begs being played over and over.   Each listen of this ambitious two-CD set by young Montreal pianist David Jalbert exposes exquisite new detail in both the works and in their interpretation.   It's impossible to imagine anyone providing a more fleet, finely nuanced or more impassioned argument… Jalbert mesmerizes across the whole range.
