Les Charbonniers de l'Enfer (Coal-sellers from hell) specialises in research and interpretation of the repertoire of the oral tradition which is a very dull description of a very exciting group! Traditional singers and foot-percussionists (what else can we do can we call these guys?), the members of Les Charbonniers de l’Enfer make Quebec and Acadian traditional music live and dance. Early Music band La Nef often finds their inspiration in cultures at the edges of the European mainstream - recent albums have included music from Scotland and Greece, Brittany, Wales, and Ireland. This time their wanderings have taken them the very farthest edges of European civilization: the isolated colonies of New France in the 17th and 18th centuries, their own home. La traverse miraculeuse collects songs of the overwhelming dangers sailors and emigrants faced at sea: storms, huge seas, pirates, and English ships. Produced and recorded by Johanne and Goyette and Anne-Marie Sylvestre at the Church of Saint-Augustin de Mirabel (Québec), Canada, June 19-27, 2008. Edited by Anne-Marie Sylvestre at ATMA’s in-house studio.
