Violinist Jonathan Crow is a native of Prince George, British Columbia, and studied at the Victoria Conservatory, the Banff Centre, and McGill University before joining the Montréal Symphony Orchestra at the age of 19, becoming Associate Concertmaster five months later. From 2002 through 2006, Crow was Concertmaster of the OSM, the youngest Concertmaster ever to lead a major North American orchestra.
Crow has appeared as soloist with most major Canadian orchestras, and with conductors including Sir Yehudi Menuhin, Charles Dutoit and Kent Nagano. He currently teaches violin at McGill University, where he is Head of Strings, and he is one of Canada's most in-demand chamber musicians. Crow has been featured on four previous ATMA recordings, with both the Chamber Players of Canada and the Montréal Chamber Players; this is his first solo recording.
Crow has chosen three sonatas for violin and piano composed within a 31-year span by composers of hugely popular works for huge orchestras. Strauss' 1887 sonata and Ravel's 1897 work (only published after his death) are the products of very young men at the beginnings of their careers, while Elgar's 1918 sonata is one of his last works, written when he had renounced large-scale works in response to the 1914-18 War.
Recorded by Johanne Goyette at the Salle Françoys-Bernier, Domaine Forget, Saint-Irénée (Québec), Canada, in November 2006.
