ROMA TRIUMPHANS
The Counter-Reformation in Rome.
Studio de musique ancienne de Montréal

What a beautiful CD! If you've never heard the rich-textured, vibrant sound of voices and viols, this would make an ideal first experience; and if you have, you'll be impressed with
the ardent, deeply felt expression of the singers, perfectly imitated and supported by the instruments
. There are other fine recordings of similar repertoire, but none better than this one. Highly recommended!

of Rise, O my soul [ACD2 2506]
This recording presents music for 2 and 3 choirs from the Counter-Reformation in Rome. All music is from Roman sources, including unpublished manuscripts.
The Studio de musique ancienne de Montréal (almost universally known as SMAM) is a group of 13 to 18 professional singers, in this recording with
cello, organ and theorbo accompaniment. While specialising in music of the Renaissance and Baroque, as their name would suggest, SMAM is also known for performances of music by contemporary composers. Their most recent ATMA Classique recording features English Anthems from the 17th Century [ACD2 2506]; they have also recorded the Stabat Mater of Arvo Pärt [ACD2 2310].
Co-founder of SMAM in 1974, Christopher Jackson has been its Artistic Director since 1988. A noted organist and harpsichordist, he has been a leader in the Early Music life in Montreal for over 30 years.
Recorded at the church of La Nativité de la Sainte-Vierge, La Prairie, Québec, April 30 - May 4, 2007. Produced by Johanne Goyette, with SACD editing by Anne-Marie Sylvestre.
ATMA Classique hybrid SACDs play in any CD or DVD player, but listeners with SACD-compatible multi-speaker systems will enjoy this polychoral music in surround sound.
