Les Violons du Roy dance the tango for their second ATMA Classique recording!   The Argentinean tango breathes sensuality, passion, and even violence, yet often emanates a profound nostalgia.   All of these characteristics are evident in these beautiful and moving performances from Les Violons du Roy, recording here for the first time under the baton of rising young star Jean-Marie Zeitouni.

Astor Piazzolla is viewed as the saviour of the tango; the composer who integrated the tango into contemporary music while breaking the boundaries of genre (as evidenced by his collaborations with diverse performers such as Georges Moustaki, Gerry Mulligan, Gary Burton, Keith Jarrett, and Mstislav Rostropovitch).

Most of the pieces here were arranged by José Bragato, a cellist who worked closely with Piazzolla in the Octeto Buenos Aires, one of the groups that left a permanent mark on the history of the tango nuevo.   Piazzolla and Bragato both attempted to reconcile serious music and Argentine popular music; the mixture explodes with modernity.

Two remarkable soloists share the spotlight: violinist Pascale Giguère in Las Cuatro Estaciones porteñas (the Four Seasons) by Piazzolla, and cellist Benoît Loiselle in Graciela y Buenos Aires by Bragato. Piazzolla's version of the Seasons (arranged for violin and strings by Russian composer Leonid Desyatnikov [b 1955]), is filled with musical allusions to Vivaldi's Four Seasons.

Les Violons du Roy are widely celebrated for the passion, energy, and vitality of their performances.   They have long been at the heart of Quebec's musical life, and are well-known elsewhere in Canada through touring as well as regular broadcasts on CBC Radio.   Regular tours across the United States have spread their reputation, and since 1988 they have given more than a hundred concerts in Germany, England, Austria, Belgium, Ecuador, Spain, France, Morocco, Mexico, and Norway.
