All of us remember the events of September 11, 2001.   More than 300 years ago, events occurred that were equally distressing to many in Central Europe; in 1683 the Turkish army besieged Vienna, destabilizing all of western Europe.   We make a leap back in time on this disc, providing a gripping musical view of the Catholic Vienna of that period.

The soloist for these rare cantatas by Fux and Badia is soprano Monica Mauch, who has built an enviable reputation in recent years.   It is no accident that she has worked with many of the greatest names in early music: the Ensemble Daedalus of Geneva, the Hilliard Ensemble, the Capella Ducale of Cologne, the Ensemble Européen William Byrd of Paris, and the Double Band under the direction of René Jacobs.

This recording offers two remarkable firsts: a reconstitution by Matthias Maute of a virtuoso sonata for flute by Johann Joseph FUX, and the world premier recording of the cantata La Fenice by the composer Carlo Agostino BADIA.

Members of Ensemble Caprice are always in search of new ways of interpreting music.   Baroque music is highlighted, yet composition, arranging, and improvisation are also important.   The innovative spirit that this group infuses into the Baroque repertoire leads to the development of thematic programs that are out of the ordinary and captivating.
