This is the final installment of Les Voix humaines' ambitious cycle of recordings of the complete works for two viols by Sainte-Colombe, the first ever in the history of recording.
Considered by many to be the greatest 17th-century gambist, Sainte-Colombe was the subject of the celebrated 1991 film Tous les matins du monde. Though much of his life remains a mystery, the emotional depth of Sainte-Colombe's music still haunts us with its range of expression and contrasts in tone and colour. Les Voix humaines' first three volumes in this cycle continue to generate critical acclaim (Goldberg 5, Diapason 5, Répertoire Recommended), and are considered "absolutely superb, encompassing all the poetic intensity of Sainte-Colombe's music."
