Western keyboard music did not suddenly spring to life with an idiomatic repertoire of its own. The earliest pieces for keyboard that survive in fourteenth-century manuscripts include no independently-conceived works, but arrangements of Ars Nova motets and instrumental dances. These arrangements were the mainstay of keyboard composers and performers who originally made their keyboard versions from different part books to accompany and give support to choral or instrumental performances. In the course of more than three centuries, composers developed a vast repertory of ornaments which they used to decorate their arrangements and display their virtuosity.
The practice of turning a polyphonic vocal or instrumental piece into a work playable by one individual is as current today as it was in the Renaissance. Pianists have access to innumerable symphonies, operatic extracts, choral pieces and chamber music works through arrangements made either for public performance or for their personal enjoyment. In Jazz
and pop cultures, the transfer from one musical medium to another is so widespread that piano or guitar versions of standards are sold by the millions and constitute the lifeblood of the sheet music business.
