Claude Vivier studied composition with Gilles Tremblay and piano with Irvng Heller at the Conservatoire de musique du Quebec in Montreal, from 1966 to 1971. With grants from the Canada Council, he worked with Gottfried Michael Koenig at the Utrecht Institute of Sonology and with Paul Méfano in Paris. He studied as well in Cologne with Stockhausen from 1972 to 1974. Vivier was commissioned numerous works by the Sociéte de musique contemporaine du Quebec, the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the Secrétariat d'Etat à la Culture de France, the National Youth Orchestra and the Toronto Festival Singers, amongst others. Following a trip to Asia in 1977, Vivier developed a new approach where the spiritual dimensions of a musical gesture becomes one of its fundamental components. His catalogue consists of some forty compositions that are generally considered as landmarks of the contemporary music scene and constitute a corpus universally recognized today. He was murdered in Paris in 1983.
