Georg Phillip Telemann was generally regarded in the first half of the 18th century as Germany's leading composer, and was much better-known than his collegue J.S. Bach. Born four years before Bach, Telemann died in 1767, when Mozard had already been giving concerts for six years. Throughout his incredibly productive career, Telemann was involved in leading-edge styles. From about 1710 through the 1760's his surviving music embodies state-of-the-art composing trends, at a time when composing style was changing at roughly the same rate as personal computer models do today. His music reflects the kaleidoscopic transformations of style in the 18th century, starting with what Germans thought of as "French", to the "mixed style", to the galant; and in his last years his music was virtually classical. -Bruce Haynes
