The best-known recorders today are the alto and the soprano. In the 18th century, though, they came in a great variety of formats, probably so they could play the repertoires of the violin and of the transverse flute, which - especially in the case of the former - had a more extended range, as well as to simplify the constraints of the different keys in which pieces were written. The alto recorder is in F, that is to say this note - the F just above middle C - is the lowest it can play, whereas the soprano recorder is in C, a fifth above the alto recorder. The voice flute is in D, hence a third lower than the alto recorder, and the fourth flute is in B flat, a fourth above the alto - hence its name - but a little lower than the soprano.
