LES CHANTRES MUSICIENS
The all-male choir Les Chantres Musiciens, of which this is the first recording,* is made up of young men between the ages of 18 and 32, all graduates of the famous boys' choir-school Les Petits Chanteurs du Mont-Royal. Associated with Saint Joseph's Oratory in Montreal, the latter institution was founded in 1956 by Father Léandre Brault. Gilbert Patenaude has been its musical director since 1978.
In 1992, a group of young graduates from the Petits Chanteurs, who wished to keep on singing, asked Mr. Patenaude to found a men's choir. Since then, the group has rehearsed weekly, exploring a vast repertoire ranging form Schubert to Weill, while including such composers as Grieg, Janacek, Poulenc and Duruflé. The Chantres Musiciens have also premiered works and arrangements written for them by their musical director.
GILBERT PATENAUDE
Musical director of Les Petits Chanteurs du Mont-Royal since 1978, Gilbert Patenaude leads a musical career that tackles many fronts. As a composer, he can be credited with works of chamber music, melodies, works for choir and orchestra, sacred music and music for the stage. At the head of numerous vocal ensembles, he has contributed hundreds of arrangements and harmonizations. His catalogue of recordings includes his opera Chevalier de Lorimier on a libretto by Thérèse Tousignant, on the SNE label, and Voyage en Amerique française, on ATMA, which contains 28 of his folksong arrangements for choir and instrumental ensemble, with the Petits Chanteurs du Mont-Royal.
* Actually, they can be heard in the Quatre petites prières de saint François d'Assise on the 1993 CD by the Petits Chanteurs du Mont-Royal devoted to Francis Poulenc.
