Debussy • Mélodies de jeunesse
French art song

Donna Brown, soprano
Stéphane Lemelin, piano

ACD2 2209

Debussy dedicated 27 of his 85 mélodies (French art song) to the lovely amateur voice of Madame Vasnier.   Most of the songs recorded here are among the 27 he composed for her, all dating from his youth.

Canadian soprano Donna Brown is known for the angelic quality of her voice and the intelligent musicality of her interpretations.   She has sung in various opera houses throughout the world, notably those of Paris, Lyon, London, Geneva, Brussels, Tokyo, Toronto, and Vancouver, in such roles as Pamina, Gilda, Sophie, Almirena, Morgana, Rosina, and the world premiere performance of the role of Chimène in Debussy's unfinished opera Rodrigue et Chimène for the opening of the renovated opera house of Lyon in 1993.

Pianist Stéphane Lemelin performs regularly across Canada, as well as in the United States, Europe and Asia.   A frequent guest of major summer festivals, he has appeared as soloist with many of Canada's principal orchestras.   He is a member of Trio Hochelaga with violinist Anne Robert and cellist Paul Marleyn, and tours with this ensemble internationally.   He is also the artistic director of the Prince Edward County Music Festival, in Picton, Ontario.
