The line between the secular and the religious being less clear than it is today, many of these carols were popular secular tunes reset for church occasions to religious texts. Of the three versions of the famous melody "Une jeune fillette" by du Caurroy, Turini, and Dandrieu presented on this recording, the latter is a perfect example of a popular song reset to a religious text.
Several of these religious texts could more aptly be described as ballads. The three lullabies "Lullaby, my sweet baby," "Coventry Carol", and "Canzonetta spirituale sopra la Nana" touchingly retell the story of the nativity and, with great foreboding, the story of the Christ child and his final demise. ...
