Like J.S. Bach a hundred years after him, Girolamo Frescobaldi stands at the end of a line of musical development stretching back nearly a century.   Born in Ferrara, he was a pupil of Luzzasco Luzzaschi (d. 1607), organist at the court of Duke Alfonso Il d'Este.   Ferrara, to a great extent because of its superlative musical forces, figured among the most brilliant of late sixteenth century Italian courts.   Duke Alfonso employed a host of Italian and Flemish singers and instrumentalists.   He assembled an instrument collection comprising more than a dozen keyboard instruments including organs, harpsichords and claviorgana (hybrid keyboards combining features of both the harpsichord and the organ).   His remarkable music library contained a rich selection of masses, motets, madrigals, and various pieces in lighter secular genres by celebrated composers like Luca Marenzio, Cipriano de Rore, Orlandus Lassus, Andrea Gabrieli, Antoine Brumel, Carlo Gesualdo, and Luzzaschi.
