Haydn composed at least 45 keyboard trios in the course of his life (the authorship of some of the trios is not entirely established, and others have almost certainly been lost). About eighteen of these were written before 1765. After ignoring the keyboard trio as a genre for some twenty years (with one exception), Haydn returned to it in the 1780s, when he produced a number of sets at the request of his London publisher.
