Whether written by Chopin or by Bach, the prelude often takes great liberties with the rules of composition, availing itself of its privileged position in the vanguard, and the fact that it occurs before the time has come to be serious or definitive: it is characterized by a somewhat anarchic, vital effervescence (…) and conjures up a state of childhood, of irresponsibility prior to the imposition of the laws of adulthood. (…) It is the 'unmeasured' time (figuratively and sometimes literally) before the precise indications of rhythm and meter which define the symmetrical and predictable time of the classical form.
