The raison d'être of this recording is to offer the listener the unique sounds of an exceptional instrument, an hautboy made in Paris by Pierre Naust in about 1700. The Naust workshop on the rue de l'Arbre Sec was one of the leading sources of good woodwinds in the period. This is the only surviving Naust hautboy in playable condition, and may be the earliest hautboy now in private hands and regularly played. François Couperin's Concerts, written in the first years of the 18th century, are of course a perfect example of the kind of repertoure the Naust would have played. ...
The gamba Susie uses on this recording is also a rare and eminently playable original. It is by Barak Norman, said to have originally been owned by Arcangelo Corelli. It is beautifully decorated, and its head appears to be Charles I. The harpsichord was made in 1985 by the Montreal builder Yves Beupré, based on late 17th-century French models.
