At a glance, England during the Renaissance would appear to have enjoyed a period relatively free of political oppression and poverty. Indeed, it was a time of cultural rebirth. Noetheless, this was an age riven by spiritual and psysical conflict in which music became the embodiment of personal transcendence.
It was a time of fame short-lived. No writer or composer could reasonably have thought their work played on. There was evidence of the language in its fullest blossom in the works of Shakespeare, though it is not certain that Shakespeare himself was aware of this.
