The astonishing variety in the musical vocabulary of twentieth century guitar music makes this epoch among the richest to date for the instrument. By the beginning of the century the physical evolution of the guitar was essentially complete, significant improvements having been made in its construction - and consequently in its musical flexibility - late in the 19th century. The long-standing tradition of the performer-as-composer in guitar literature continued through the 20th century but, in a refreshing departure from past trends, some of the century's recognized masters Webern, Martin, Boulez, Britten - included the guitar in their works in some capacity.
