Impressions de/from France DEBUSSY, SAINT-SAËNS, RABAUD, POULENC, FRANÇAIX André Moisan clarinette / clarinet Louise-Andrée Baril piano ACD2 2121 The invention of the clarinet, at the beginning of the 18th Century, is generally attributed to Johann Christoph Denner and his son. who transformed the shawm by giving it a single reed and cylindrical bore and adding a number of keys.   The clarinet appeared at a time when other instruments like the viola da gamba and the recorder were falling into disuse, and gained popularity so quickly that in 1758 it was found in the famous Mannheim Court orchestra.   Like the new pianoforte, the clarinet's warm timbre, dynamic flexibility and great expressive possibilities were extolled.   In the 19th Century, the great composers wrote more works for the clarinet than for any other wind instrument.   In about 1840, there were significant improvements to the instrument's design.   However, slight variations in how it was made persisted between countries and fostered the development of -schools- or national playing styles.
